Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise was a nurse working night shifts to ensure she could spend the day to literature, art or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother the power of art as an effective tool for social change. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and taught her to say something by using the arts. DuVernay was born with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama led her to create a documentary on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She then attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American studies. When she was still an undergraduate student DuVernay was interested in creating in broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to look over the residence that one of the members of the jury. She was also asked to go through their garbage. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she chose to move towards the publicity business. DuVernay was brought on straight after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in one of the smaller studios. In 1999, she launched her own company of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
