Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise in her early years. She was a night nurse so that she could give her aunt time that she required in the day to indulge in the arts, literature and theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized to engage people. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family she always spent summers with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the famous civil rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time she spent there to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing content for broadcast journalism while she was still in the college. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the family home, and then looking through the garbage of one of jurors. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she chose to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay got a job right from college to be the junior publicist for an unassuming studio. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her company launched a range of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
